You don’t have to have me come through a Humanities Iowa grant (scroll down to the second section below to find out how to do it), but it is such a good deal that I strongly recommend it for Iowa events that qualify.
One of my programs costs $300 with 65 cents a mile mileage. (I wave mileage for any event within 30 miles). Programs out of state are $400. Extra services, materials, or an overnight stay may add to cost. I’m willing to make reductions for a second program within the same system on the same trip. I’m willing to work with multiple locations on the same trip to share traveling expenses. Another alternative is a virtual program. Virtual programs are $200 – no mileage or other costs charged. I provide a paid version of Zoom or we can use yours if you prefer. I am also available to speak out of state. I have been approved for several events with the South Dakota Humanities program, but each needs a proposal. I’m glad to work with you for any needed proposal.
The booking process:1. Decide roughly what you want me to do. Do you have a program in mind? Read all about my possible programs. Are you thinking about extras like handouts or crafts? How long do you want me to be there outside of the program (for example if it’s an event do you want me to circulate awhile before the presentation and drum up interest)? Also, do you want me for one program or more? 2. Contact me and set up a date. We both have to agree on a date and time that works for both of us. 3. Price depends on exactly where you want me to go and what you want me to do. Please contact me so we can discuss the details. For programs NOT through Humanities Iowa normally I charge $300 for an in-state program with 65 cents a mile mileage, but exact charges can depend on the answers to number 1 above. Out of state the first program is $400. Additional programs can be added at a single site for a lower rate. Virtual programs are $200. You can talk with me for suggestions for funding.
Presenting In the Kitchen With Laura in Mason CityQualifying for a Humanities Iowa GrantAs a member of the Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau, I am pre-approved for their community group grants. That can be libraries, schools, museums, and other civic organizations or groups. Find a list of requirements at the link above, but basically you need to be located in Iowa and have a program aimed at either adults or families. Children only groups are not approved, but I’ve had approvals for groups that met within a school or had school based groups as long as you also reach out to the public to come to the event. Be sure to specify how you will do that on the grant application. Here is their online speakers grant application form . Humanities Iowa runs grants starting at a set date and running until all the money is distributed. Watch the site because these dates may change because of budget. Please note that you do NOT have to fill out the full grant application that is located under the Grants tab on their homepage to get a Speakers Bureau speaker. You have to fill out the online speakers bureau grant form. If your group’s event is approved, you pay $50 and Humanities Iowa will cover most other expenses. (Extra costs might apply when an overnight stay is necessary, for supplies if you choose to add an optional craft, etc.) For more information check their webpage.
Or contact them at: Humanities Iowa PO Box 881 Ames, IA 50010 Ready for publicity? 4. Visit the For Reporters, the Press, and Other Publicity page for downloadable photos with full rights for use, information about the programs, answers to questions I’m frequently asked by the press, a sample press release and other useful information.
Contact me for available dates. Programs do NOT have to be funded through Humanities Iowa, but it is a good deal for those that qualify. I am also available for programs out of state.
